ordered a handful of scholars computer to explain how they have developed courses to meet industry and present the challenges of maintaining a constantly evolving sector
Dr Louis Natansonlead the educational team games
Abertay University
- which launched the first degree in computer games technology in 1997
Literacy is absolutely crucial to future economic growth in the UK. Graduates who can code, solve complex problems and work seamlessly with their colleagues in non-technical teams desperately need. The foundations of mathematics and physics are essential to the drive of the computer, but also the knowledge of skill in the art, business and communication. At the University of Abertay, teaching students in project teams that include programmers, artists and sound engineers -. Just like being in a small creative company
all began in the 1990s, after Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto came from Dundee. Local game design legends Dave and Kay Russell Jones approached Abertay, arguing that the growing industry needed a new approach to education - with the participation of industry and the weakening of traditional education and workplace
in our classrooms, students are required to work from the different thematic areas. A programmer and an artist totally different approaches and vocabularies, and often spend the first week of a joint project is to learn to work with each other - which can be a challenge. These joint projects are a crucial part of personal and professional development of the student, requiring the practical application of their academic learning, a mixture of problem solving and teamwork, and interaction with professionals who have much experience in the industry. All these elements are crucial to the process is feasible and positive.
The report "Next Gen" recommends that universities continue to focus on other "work simulation" model of education in a business online to bring together industry experts to students and mentors provide information about our design and course content. I highly recommend this method to colleagues at other universities - working with local industries is a very positive process for all participants The challenge was clearly articulated by Eric Schmidt of Google - to excel in computer science, universities need to teach the art and science of hand to hand. This is exactly what you are doing at the University of Abertay, in our securities and international design competition for the games Dare to be Digital. The government should also take advantage of its planned investments in the center of creative digital industries to catapult the United Kingdom. There will be great opportunities to inspire and promote computer literacy, if the center is planned based on this vital link between art and science. "
MarkShufflebottom, professor of interactive design and Adobe Education Leader
Bournemouth University
- praised for its links with industry
Bournemouth Universityrequiring a high level of digital literacy of our students as part of digital design media and very few students actually achieve any programming knowledge. We need to take students through the preliminary steps to reach a basic level of knowledge so we can show how the code and digital literacy can be used as fuel for the creative industries. We merge physics, mathematics, art, design and means for producing mobile applications, games, web sites, facilities and social entertainment experiences. Do not just focus on programming, but to examine what factors influence the experience and quality of user interaction with these devices. Many students work with different technologies and are often the bridge between these technologies to create cutting-edge digital experiences. This is reflected in the high degree of success of the competition that students from Bournemouth University receives both the UK and around the world.
be a growth area of ??employment, we find students are struggling to find jobs and recruiters to contact the Digital Media Design course regularly to be recommended to students before graduation and have work experience. You really need more students with computer literacy to meet the demands of this growing industry.
The industry is changing fast and a challenge because many technologies up and down constantly. Our digital design course, the media has been running for over 15 years and what we have learned is that a major reason for its success is that is regularly reviewed and evaluated by a panel of experts through an Advisory Board the industry. This means that the course (staff and students) have the advantage of highly skilled professionals working in the industry. This coupled with our many former success means that the field is in a high profile, unique and inexpensive - you can stay ahead of trends in the education sector in future technologies and standards TODAY 'hui. This in turn is related to the lack of capacity, because BU graduates can hit the ground running and advising employers on the latest technological solutions as has already had one hand on the paper in the future.
Professor Malcolm Crowe, Faculty of Science and Technology,
University of the West of Scotland announced an academic collaboration with IBM to provide students with access to IBM software and technology training in the analysis of business models and business As for the computer school is concerned, it had an interest in employability and needs of our businesses, and entrepreneurs are looking for superior skills. We have a very large industrial and Council advisory successful, with representatives from many different companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Apple, a large number of user companies and banks are involved.
- computer courses such as ours, which focus on improving students' skills and practices of theoretical basis has a real problem keeping the material basis of software and course materials.
Ideally, we focus on theoretical, systematic approaches to develop solutions that work for the industry as a whole, and then find ways to ensure that students in to using the latest tools of large suppliers.
In part, it is difficult to keep up, but this is part of a wide area and range of computer skills that exist and the range of experience sought by employers is very broad. We must try to listen to many of these things as possible and cover as many bases as possible within the duration of the courses we offer, which is our curriculum must work for a wide variety of jobs, and so on.
rather puzzles me a bit to comment on the digital literacy of the Guardian of an employer who wanted someone for a project of gaming software, with experience in software and a particular type of mathematics, it is very specialized.
