A report by civil society groups, says it is impossible to address the causes of hunger, if the existing power relations remain intact
Aa rightsare the most powerful tool to ensure efforts against hunger and malnutrition to address the structural causes and not just short-term strategies, groups civil society said in a report released Tuesday.
Who decidesglobal food and nutrition? - Strategies to regain control argues that it is impossible to fight against the causes of hunger, maintenance of existing power relations virgin
"The food and power are related. 'S almost impossible to find a person among the powerful in society and in the political world who do not have enough to eat," said Huguette Akplogan- Dossa, Regional Coordinator African Network on the Right to Food (ANoRF). "The trend is that the exclusion of economic and political decision to go along with the incidence of hunger and malnutrition".
The report is particularly concerned about the growing influence and control of agro-industrial and financial corporations on food and nutrition.
"Too often, food companies and nutrition use their weight and influence to increase their profit margins, and manipulate the rules to their interests and convenience, without considering the interests of small-scale food producers and the survival of their communities - not to mention the moral and legal right to food, "said Peter Prove, Executive Director of the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance
The report indicates a fault in the approach to food security - access to safe and nutritious food. There is a "horizontal approach" favored by governments and international organizations such as Agra, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, and is supported by the Gates Foundation, which focuses on technocratic approaches - better seeds and technology - to boost productivity and access to markets. This week, Agra organizing a forum in Arusha, Tanzania, in terms of agricultural development in Africa.
- "Allow decisions in the hands of a small but powerful led to a centralized model of food supply, resulting in many cases, hunger, political violence or violation of obligations of the State in terms of basic human rights: to respect, protect and fulfill "the report says
