study of tree rings, corals and ice cores found abnormal peak temperature that is aligned with the human-induced climate change

The last 60 years have been the warmest for a millennium in Australia and can not be explained by natural causes, according to a new report from scientists who support the case of a reduction in carbon emissions rights.

In the first major study of its kind in the region, scientists from the University of Melbourne used data from 27 natural climate indicators, including tree rings The corals and ice cores to map the evolution of temperatures during the last 1000 years.

"Our study showed that recent warming in the context of 1000 years is very unusual and can not be explained by natural factors alone, suggesting a strong influence human rights caused by climate change in the Australasian region, "said principal investigator Dr. Joëlle Gergis.

climate reconstruction was done in 3000 in different ways and concluded with an accuracy of 95% of any other period of the year 1000, after the party or exceeded -1950 warming in Australia.

"The models showed that, before 1850, there was no long-term trends and changes in temperature are probably caused by natural climate variability, which is a random process, "he said.

" However, the [model showed] the warming of the 20th century far exceeds the amplitude of natural climate variability and shows that the warming of recent experience in Australia not unprecedented in the context of the last millennium. "
maximum annual average daily temperatures in Australia rose by 0.75 ° C since 1910. Since the 1950s every decade has been warmer than the last.

Wenlock Edge: erotic reputation This extraordinary plant was updated in 1655 a translation of Dioscorides, who claimed "the affections stirrs be Conjugation dranck with wine "

belongs on the wilder side of the fence - thick shadows, not served under the trees and flowering hedges by rain splash. On the other side of the fence, the old order remains intact correctly. Keep out: the fields are green and fertilized with chemicals, thistles and nettles have been treated with herbicides, hedges shook, the trees cut and removed dead wood, lush grass is grazed by lambs and sheep that has suffered so fat. It's bucolic industrial scale.

But in one corner of the field, the rebels gather. Rabbits nibbling the grass of the owners, always a tic-danger signs, have the nerve to have survived centuries of firearms, dogs, railways, roads, disease and climate rotten to steal the life of Earth. In air, the swifts have returned to howl around the rooftops of Wenlock, as if they owned the place. Lords-and-ladies, our intelligent rebellion, not surprisingly, but it disappeared, said in March.

multimillionaires bushes study subjects with high levels of precipitation patterns and impaired CO2

an Australian university has embarked on an ambitious project - considered the first of its kind in the world -. To simulate what would be the environment through runaway climate change

The decade of the study, University of Western Sydney Hawkesbury Environment Institute, Australia will have to rub high rates of precipitation patterns and altered consistent with a CO2 "business as usual" global increase in greenhouse gas emissions.

The centerpiece of the study is Eucalyptus external CO2 enrichment experiment, which involved the construction of fiberglass and steel structures six-meter high and 28 to 25 meters in diameter in native forest in Richmond, New South Wales. Structures contain a set of sensors that provide a concentration of CO2 in trees in the rings.

This, scientists say, will create an atmosphere that CO2 is 550 ppm - 40% higher than current levels -. To see how the environment would change living organisms, including humans

aa

This level of CO2 was chosen to mimic how the environment would react in a world where not taken any significant steps to reduce carbon emissions over the next 35 years.

It is anticipated that a 40% increase in CO2 emissions would result in an increase in global average temperature about three degrees Celsius.

An automated computer controlled modular system of the CO2 pumped out of the rings, to account for environmental variability.

Scientists use a giant 43 meter high crane to study the impact on all parts of tall eucalypts, such as bacteria and fungi in soil, the growth patterns of the glass trees and insects that live in the foliage.

many facilities of the institute was funded through an AUS $ 40 million (25 million pounds) of federal grant, the strengthening of an investment of $ 15 million for the University of Western Sydney.

Professor David Ellsworth, who heads the "outdoor" experience, participated in a similar study at Duke University in the United States.

"We give you a window into how biodiversity will behave in terms futuristic."

The first results of the study, scheduled to begin in September, will be published next year.

However, the institute has already conducted a preliminary investigation - the results can be read here and here -. In a small collection of trees in the last 18 months, to test their reactions to warmer temperatures and increased CO2

'Climbing trees and other sports were my first lessons in art "

What you start?

I grew up in Aberdeen, Washington, providing a green environment of an imaginative mind. I climbed trees, played sports, hunting and fishing with my father. They were my first lessons in art. I have very early memories of circulation while playing outside as a child - and I can integrate my dancing game. Of course, I also received formal training: who has studied ballet, tap and acrobatics, but I do not know if I wanted to get into the visual arts or dance. I lived between the two until the accumulation [accumulating a series of works made in the 1970s]. Now I live among them again.

What was his great discovery?

was in an improvisation workshop and famous in New York, led by Anna Halprin in 1959. That's when I got to "fly" [leave the ground dramatically]. I was in love with improvisation since: the spirit of the game, and its rhythmic structure, which brings me to my childhood. And I always wanted to fly.

Who or what have you sacrificed for your art?

For me, everything is connected. All you have done for my art has never felt like a sacrifice.

His work is closely related to the precepts of visual art. Artists are often required to comply with this art form one?

I've never been worried about what is expected of me. When I arrived in New York, much of my work was the reaction against convention, the claim, romanticism and sentimentalism. It was art. There are visual art or the art of dance - just art. I am disappointed to see these distinctions creeping back in. They were dissolved in the 1960s for good reason.

What song or piece of music that serves as the soundtrack to your life?

My life has been located between the notes of Laurie Anderson, Alvin Curran, John Cage, a host of bands, from Bach and Jean-Philippe Rameau recently. This is a soundtrack varied and complex, but it's great. William Christie can be performed.

My work with the National Arts Council in the 1990s [meet with U.S. politicians to advocate for arts funding]. Art reflects the world around us and what the world could be. The message to those who control the funding was a labor of love.

These are excerpts from speeches delivered in the city of public debate on the subject, with a link to the full text and Warwick Commission report to elected mayors

yesterday after

North

tutor

Message

in Bradford, and only a debate at city hall, the organizers have posted in the speeches of representatives major party of the event online.

You can read it all here, courtesy of JUST West Yorkshire, Bradford University Student Union, Bradford Bradford Cathedral and the Council of Muslim women who jointly organized the discussion at the Midland Hotel. I added as a temporary job in my

True North blog, which has many other fascinating material on the previous messages for that time.

For convenience, here are short excerpts from each speech:

Councillor Simon Cooke - Conservative Party

Bradford should have a directly elected mayor, and in fact if you want someone who would be mayor you could ask anyone better than the man who saved the building, John Pennington. But I'll start with the most important part of this debate, which is the need for a mayor, the need to change the system of government in this city because it is much more important than the question of personality, or the question to know that the mayor should be. At this point, we take a dull, barely accounts that city driving is not decided by us, the people, it was decided by them to administrators. And is decided at closed party meetings, behind closed doors and not through open discussion.

Alyas Karmani - Respect Party

respect we want to vote yes for a directly elected mayor. So this is not the first time we will go against the political class, and perhaps not the first time we beat them too. What we do with a directly elected mayor - we could have a transformation of our city in a few days and in a few weeks with a directly elected mayor. And it is a change not seen in our city for 20 years.

By voting yes for a directly elected mayor, we vote yes to a powerful passionate local advocate, to be a voice for the entire city and also a defender of the city as well.

Kevin Warnes

country - The Green Party

country
David Green - Labour Party

must be clear that an elected mayor can not ignore the wishes of local communities, you can ignore the wishes of councilors to represent. Does becoming a lame duck - its ability to influence the electoral process in a year in the base year is going to disappear and that adherence to the mayor cut the center
You are left with a situation where the only influence their advisors will, is to try to block the block budgets and projects and bring the system to shutdown. I ask to be careful what you wish and I ask you to think carefully about whether a person away from the door of his house to do everything in its decision, or will you work with a system - in which each year can affect on what is happening in Bradford and his community. I invite you to reflect on the way forward for this city where we live and I love you all.

a pilot project that helps schools to solar energy is implemented nationally. You have two weeks to ask

A little over a year I found myself climbing through a skylight in the roof of the school of Fox, a director on a street back in London Notting Hill. The director, Paul Cotter, took me to see a solar energy system installed recently, an impressive number of blue-black full of solar panels on the roof of the building in 1930 and inclined toward the southern sky in plastic holders of thickness

As I looked along the West London (and admiring the garden and henhouse below), Cotter said how great the school to install a renewable energy system. In addition to reducing carbon and reduce the bill, the solar project has helped to mobilize the school behind environmental problems. And the signs are a valuable educational resource in itself.

who had gone to visit Fox as part of my job at 10:10 - campaign on climate change The Guardian helped launch 18 months ago. Designed by Franny Armstrong, filmmaker, the campaign has called on all people and organization to reduce its carbon footprint by 10% in 2010. The objective was to demonstrate that global warming was easily solved if the company has withdrawn their socks.

More than 100,000 people and organizations registered in the first year, Colin Firth Coventry City Council, O2 at the University of Oxford, Stockport NHS at Newquay Zoo. In addition, over a thousand schools of all sizes and shapes.

2011, some schools and other organizations have met or exceeded the target of 10% and wanted to take their green efforts to the next level. Others were given a chance, but could not get buy-in across the organization. The two groups, we realized that I needed a way to get all students or staff more engaged - what it means to have something exciting, tangible and ambitious to aspire. Something like a sunroof Fox

10:10 In the campaign

liked the idea of ??helping schools to install solar energy, especially if you can do in a way that gave parents, neighbors and a wider community in a positive and easy to engage the problem of climate change. There was one problem: subsidies for most of the solar system had been eliminated from the Fox for a "feed-in tariff" that provides a payment for each unit of energy produced during a period of 25 years. It was good in the long term, but means that schools must find a way to cover the initial costs, which start at about £ 10 000 for a small system.

10:10 While he was with the solar schools -. A project to help schools' funds attract "a roof by collecting many small donations from their local community

Best

all in the perspective of 10:10 's, the success of each school would become a showcase and empowerment of a community working together to tackle climate change. We might even be able to work with the communities themselves in other projects in the future, such as schools conversion based on street by street, or investment in wind farms in the community

To test the idea solar schools we launched a pilot program, and create a website with an accompanying set of resources to help participating schools to raise money.

Family and friends

students, graduates and local businesses could sponsor small square roof by buying bonds of ? 5 or participating in fundraisers and proven, such as sales of the plate . The site lists each donor sunroof gradually "filling" and has added photos and spread the word on Twitter and Facebook. 10:10 team of the organization in each school and also provide blogs and email tools.

So if your school would like to begin next year with a very interesting project - to reduce carbon and invoices, to use an income for 25 years, and together the local community - fill 'www.solarschools.org.uk form / apply. Who knows, this time next year could be climbing through a skylight, roof showing off your school.

politicians, Boris Johnson in particular - need to act on bicycle safety, and a great event on April 28 will grab your attention

On Saturday, April 28, the UK, will see its largest ever made in support of our streets safer for cycling - the Vuelta Grande. Thousands gather to move along a road closed to traffic in central London, sending a clear message to politicians - including candidates for mayor - who wants to ride a bike is safe and welcoming for all. This family event, with tours of the power for all London boroughs, is organized by the London Cycling Campaign.

We are delighted that the issue of bicycle safety has permeated the media and mayors manifests itself as never before. We have already collected 30,000 signatures for our "Love London, Go Dutch" application on bicycle safety. And for the first time, three of the four main candidates manifests to contain language that specifically recognizes the success of the Dutch cycling.

However, the specific promises of the two major candidates are not yet strong enough to ensure a transformation of the entire city, so that events like this are essential to the safety of cyclists that is really a priority for the next mayor.

We annotated the manifesto of the four main candidates promises for cycling, and taking into account their public profile to the bike, it is fascinating that the current mayor, Boris Johnson, ranks last. It is also remarkable that Johnson is the only candidate that does not relate to the provision of quality Dutch bikes in the manifesto.

In the Netherlands, cyclists are not supposed to negotiate the type of lethal union, where he killed 41-year-old father of four children, Frank Magisha two weeks ago. And the Dutch school are not required to travel on residential streets within walking distance of the school who have motor vehicles traveling at 30 mph. It was on one of these roads as eight years, Ali Nasrallah was killed last month in Kingston, when he comes home from school by bike.

If you ever ride a bike in London as a resident or visitor - or even if you do not like, they just want to make places of our cities better - you need. We want the grand tour to be fun. We encourage people to dress up, play music, view photos on our website, bring friends and a picnic - but our message to the politicians could not be more serious now is the time to rethink our streets to put the People
