The only orchid among the 25,000 species that blooms only one night, is located near Papua New Guinea

An orchid that spreads its petals at night and lose their flowers during the day was found on an island off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

The plant is the only known the night orchid flower and was collected by botanists from a trip to New England, an island in the Bismarck Archipelago.

The flowers of the species,

Bulbophyllum

nocturnum , are believed to be pollinated by mosquitoes and last for one night, according to a plant descriptions published in the Journal of the Linnean Society Botany.

Orchid Specialist Ed Vogel of the Netherlands, discovered the unusual flowering after a few of the plants collected from trees in a forest area on the island and return home to cultivate orchids Hortus Botanicus of Leiden. Most orchids are epiphytes, which means that trees take root.

The botanist was particularly anxious to see the flowers of the orchid, for he was a member of the orchid Epicrianthes. This group contains several species of flowers with strange strange appendages, which often resemble long-legged insects, hairy spiders and small sea creatures complexes.

flowers that open only at night are a few species of plants, such as the queen of the night, the tree cactus of the terror of midnight jasmine and flowering of night.
Bulbophyllum
nocturnum
the orchid is only among the 25 000 known species to do so. Many orchids are pollinated by moths and other insects, but the flowers that remain open during the day.

In 1862, Charles Darwin correctly predicted that the Christmas star orchid that is endemic to Madagascar, has been fertilized by a moth with a proboscis 30 inches long. The butterfly in question was not discovered until 20 years after his death.
The small yellow-green sepals of orchid petals are held to be decorated with tiny appendages hanging grayish, thick and thin. The flower, which is 2 cm wide, has no perceptible odor, although some nocturnal species may from time the release of odors to attract pollinating insects at night.
